Two Republican-held seats that decide how high the Democratic count can go are close in the latest polls. In Texas, a UMass Lowell poll released October 8 had James Talarico and Ken Paxton tied at 45%, and on October 7 President Trump called for the two to debate. In Maine, Senator Susan Collins and Troy Jackson held their third debate on October 13, after a Marist poll of Maine had Jackson ahead 51% to 47%.
Republicans hold the chamber 53–47 today, so Democrats need a net gain of four seats for a 51-seat majority; at 50–50, Vice President JD Vance breaks ties for Republicans. On October 6 the Cook Political Report moved Kansas to Toss Up and New Hampshire and North Carolina toward Democrats.
On Kalshi, the most likely single result for Democrats is more than 52 seats, at 35%, followed by exactly 52 at 17%. On the Republican side, Kalshi's most likely single number is 48 seats, at 17%, and Polymarket puts Republicans at 47 seats or fewer at about 38%. The live tables above update through the day.
Latest updates
- October 14, 2026 (checked about 10:20 p.m. Eastern): on Kalshi, Democrats holding more than 52 seats last traded at 35¢ and exactly 52 at 17¢; Republicans holding exactly 48 last traded at 17¢. On Polymarket, Republicans at 47 or fewer seats had a 38.5% midpoint (38¢ bid, 39¢ ask). These are snapshots; the tables above show the current prices.
- October 13, 2026: Collins and Jackson held the third of their four scheduled debates, covering energy costs, health care and immigration enforcement.
- October 8, 2026: UMass Lowell released a Texas poll of 850 likely voters, taken September 18–28, with Talarico and Paxton tied at 45% (margin of error ±4.5 points).
- October 7, 2026: President Trump posted that Talarico should debate Paxton; no debate has been scheduled.
- October 6, 2026: Cook moved Kansas to Toss Up, North Carolina to Likely Democratic and New Hampshire to Lean Democratic. Marist released its Maine poll of 1,505 registered voters, taken October 1–4 (margin of error ±3.8 points).
How to read the seat boards
Each venue's board has its own table, because the two count seats differently (see below), so their prices aren't averaged. Each line is one seat count or a catch-all, and only one line on each board can win.
Kalshi's Democratic board runs from "below 45" to "above 52", and its Republican board from "below 45" to "above 57". Polymarket's Republican board has exact numbers from 48 to 56, with "47 or fewer" and "57 or more" at the ends; those catch-alls aren't the same bet as Kalshi's exactly 47 or 57.
The Democratic and Republican boards usually move together, but they aren't exact mirror images: an empty seat or a senator outside both parties can leave the two counts short of 100.
What matters
- The four-seat gap. Democrats need to flip four Republican seats without losing any of their own for a majority. A gain of three gives a 50–50 Senate that Republicans still run.
- Maine and Texas. Both are Republican-held seats where recent polls are close; they're the gap between a 50-seat and a 52-seat Democratic result.
- The widening map. Kansas moving to Toss Up adds a Republican seat to the list Democrats can realistically win.
Key dates
- October 15, 2026: final scheduled Maine Senate debate.
- October 19, 2026: early voting begins in Texas.
- Tuesday, November 3, 2026: general election.
- February 1, 2027: Kalshi counts the seats each party holds.
How the markets settle
Kalshi's Democratic seats market (KXDSENATESEATS-27) and Republican seats market (RSENATESEATS-27) count the seats each party holds on February 1, 2027, not the seats it wins on Election Day. Seats that aren't up this year count too, and independents who caucus with Democrats, such as Bernie Sanders and Angus King, count as Democrats. A resignation, appointment or party switch before February 1 changes the count. "52" means exactly 52; "above 52" means 53 or more.
Polymarket's Republican Senate seats market goes by the election result instead: a seat counts for the party that wins it, and stays that way after a vacancy or party switch. So Kalshi's 48 and Polymarket's 48 can settle differently, which is why each venue has its own table.
Polymarket US lists Republican and Democratic seat markets too, but the site can't show their prices yet. Its Democratic market asks "45 or more", "49 or more" and so on, a different question from Kalshi's exact counts.
Each market's full rules are on its own page on Kalshi (search the codes above) and Polymarket. We name the markets here instead of linking them, because our links to these apps open their home or sign-up page, not the market.
