How we count volume
Volume is contracts traded at their $1 face value: a contract that pays $1 if it’s right counts as $1, whatever it cost. Dollars paid is what traders actually spent, each contract at the price it traded. A 10¢ contract adds $1 to volume and 10¢ to dollars paid, so the gap is widest on long shots.
The venues don’t report alike: Kalshi’s headline figure counts contracts at $1, while Polymarket reports dollars paid. We count every venue both ways from the same trade data, so Kalshi’s figures here compare directly with every other venue’s.

DeFi Rate tracks Kalshi’s trading volume every day: contracts traded and dollars paid, its share of prediction-market volume, its busiest categories and markets, open interest and trades, and every month since August 2025. The figures come from our market data, update through the day, and are free to cite with a link. Volume by day. Every day we track, on a chart you can set to 30 days, 90 days, a year or all of it.

How Kalshi trades. Trades per day, the average trade, open interest at each day’s close and how many markets trade.

Methodology
Data. Volume comes from DeFi Rate’s market data, built from each venue’s own trades. Days are UTC; weeks run Monday to Sunday. The latest day stays open until it ends, and each section shows when its figures were observed.
Two measures. Volume counts contracts traded at their $1 face value. Dollars paid counts each contract at the price it traded. We count every venue both ways from the same trades, so figures compare across venues even though the venues report differently: Kalshi’s headline figure counts contracts, Polymarket’s counts dollars paid.
Market share. Kalshi’s volume divided by the volume of every venue we track (Kalshi, Polymarket and Polymarket US), in the same measure over the same days.
Categories. Each market is counted in one category. Multi-leg combos have their own category, stated in dollars paid beside the ranking rather than ranked: each leg sells for a few cents, so counted in contracts at $1 they’d top every category. Volume without a category is ranked as Other.
History and records. Our daily history starts August 1, 2025, so records are the biggest since then. When our data provider has lost part of a day, changes compare the average day across the days both periods have in full, and say how many were left out.
- How is Kalshi trading volume calculated?
Our headline volume counts contracts traded at their $1 face value, which is how Kalshi reports its own volume. We also show the dollars actually paid: each contract at the price it traded. Neither includes fees, and neither is open interest.
- Does notional volume equal actual dollars at risk?
No. A contract traded at 10¢ adds $1 to volume but 10¢ to the dollars paid, so the gap is widest on long shots. That’s why we show both figures side by side: volume measures how much changed hands, dollars paid how much money was spent.
- How often is DeFi Rate data updated?
Through the day. The latest day fills in as trades happen and closes at midnight UTC; the 30-day figures, charts and tables update with it, and each section shows when it was observed.
- Why does sports account for such a large share of Kalshi’s volume?
Sports markets, from NFL and college football to tennis, soccer and the major leagues, list new games every day and trade heavily right up to and during each game. Crypto markets that settle every 15 minutes add a steady base, and multi-leg combos are a growing share.
- What does “2026 so far” represent?
Kalshi’s volume from January 1 of this year (UTC) through its latest full day. “Everything we track” covers every day since August 1, 2025, where our daily history begins.
- How is Kalshi’s market share calculated?
Kalshi’s volume divided by the volume of every venue we track (Kalshi, Polymarket and Polymarket US), in the same measure over the same days. The share chart uses each day’s trailing seven days, which smooths out weekends and one-off events.
- Where does your underlying data come from?
From DeFi Rate’s market data, built from the venues’ own trades and reviewed before publication. We count every venue the same way, so Kalshi’s figures compare directly with Polymarket’s.
- Why don’t historical months update when Kalshi recategorizes an event?
Each market is counted in the category it had when it traded, so past months keep the breakdown they had at the time.
- Can I download or cite the data?
Yes. The prediction market volume page has CSV downloads of daily volume by venue, categories and the most traded markets, and every figure can be quoted or charted with a link under our data license.
