Methodology

Data Source
Trading volume data is sourced from Kalshi’s public market activity. Market share figures are derived by comparing Kalshi and Polymarket reported volumes over the same period. Raw data is reviewed and cleaned prior to publication. 2025 figures sourced from Dune for YoY comparison.
Volume figures
Dollar volume represents the total notional value of contracts traded (number of contracts × price paid), not open interest or fees. All figures are in USD.
Category breakdown
Events are assigned to a single category at the time of listing. Recategorizations are not retroactively applied to historical months.
Update frequency
All charts are updated daily. Weekly figures are finalized each Sunday and locked; intra-week bars reflect volume to date.
Event volume
Represents lifetime volume for each market from open to close, regardless of when the event occurred.
Rounding
All dollar figures are rounded to the nearest $10M for display. Underlying CSV data is unrounded.
How is Kalshi trading volume calculated?

Volume figures represent total notional value. This is the number of contracts traded multiplied by the face value of each contract. This is not open interest, and it does not include fees. All figures are in USD.

Does notional volume equal actual dollars at risk?

No. Kalshi counts volume by multiplying contracts by their $1 face value rather than the price paid, and records both sides of every transaction separately. A contract bought and sold at $0.10 generates $2.00 in volume against $0.10 in actual dollars exchanged. The longer the odds, the wider the gap, and for the same reason headline volume figures bear little relationship to Kalshi’s actual fee revenue.

How often is DeFi Rate data updated?

All charts update daily. Weekly figures are finalized each Sunday and locked; bars showing the current week reflect volume to date, not a completed week. Monthly figures follow the same daily cycle.

Why does sports account for such a large share of Kalshi’s volume?

Sports markets, primarily major US leagues and tournament events, consistently drive more than 80% of Kalshi’s total monthly volume. Event-driven trading spikes around postseason schedules and marquee matchups pull a disproportionate share of contract activity.

What does the cumulative total represent?

The cumulative line tracks year-to-date notional volume from January 1 of the current calendar year. It resets each year, so the figure currently shown reflects 2026 activity only, not all-time volume.

How is Kalshi’s market share calculated?

Market share compares Kalshi’s reported volume against Polymarket’s over the same rolling weekly window. Both figures are drawn from public market activity and normalized to USD.

Where does your underlying data come from?

We pull volume data from Kalshi’s public API. All data is reviewed and cleaned before publication.

Why don’t historical months update when Kalshi recategorizes an event?

Events are assigned to a single category at the time of listing and that assignment doesn’t change retroactively, so historical monthly breakdowns reflect the label in place when the market was live.

Can I download the raw data?

Yes, each chart includes a CSV export option. Display figures are rounded to the nearest $10M; the underlying CSV files are unrounded.
