Little movement, last 7 days

Little movement in the last 7 days. The largest was Zach Lahn (R), −1 pt to 12%.

Rob Sand and Zach Lahn meet in Sioux City tonight, October 14, for the second of four debates: an hour on KTIV-TV starting at 7 p.m. Central. Two more follow, an Iowa PBS debate on October 21 and a KCRG-TV debate in Cedar Rapids on October 27. The seat is open because Gov. Kim Reynolds isn't running again, and no Democrat has been elected governor of Iowa since 2006.

The first debate, on October 6 at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, turned on where Lahn has lived. Sand pointed to Lahn's voting record in Kansas and said Iowa needs a "full-time Iowan" as governor. Lahn called that "the central lie of Rob Sand's campaign" and said he wouldn't be intimidated by the wealth of Sand's family. Lahn also called for ending tax breaks for data centers, which breaks with President Trump, according to Newsweek's debate coverage. Lahn spoke about seven and a half minutes longer than Sand, and Sand said the next day he let that happen on purpose, Bleeding Heartland's Laura Belin noted. Sand's in-laws have given his campaign more than $12 million, which Lahn raised again on stage.

Every poll released this month has Sand ahead, by different margins. A New York Times/Siena poll of 606 likely voters, taken September 22–October 1 and reported October 3, had him up 52% to 41%. A Suffolk University poll of 500 likely voters, taken October 1–4 and released October 7, had him up 55% to 43% (margin of error ±4.4 points). An Emerson College poll released the same week was closer, 49% to 45%, according to Bleeding Heartland. Two polls taken in September, by Fox News (1,008 likely voters, taken September 24–28, released October 1) and Marist (1,050 registered voters, taken September 17–20, released September 22), had Sand ahead 53% to 44% and 54% to 42%, according to Newsweek.

The markets make Sand the favorite. Checked at 3:56 p.m. Eastern on October 14, Sand's side last traded at 88% on Kalshi, and Polymarket's Democrats-win market sat at 90.5%, the midpoint between its 90¢ bid and 91¢ ask. The live table on this page updates through the day.

The matchup

This is an open seat: Kim Reynolds isn't running again. Sand, the state auditor and the only Democrat holding statewide office in Iowa, is the Democratic nominee. Lahn won the Republican primary on June 2.

What matters in the race

  • Who turns out. Polls taken at the same time disagree on how big Sand's lead is, mostly because they make different guesses about who will vote in November.
  • Independents. Marist's September poll had independents backing Sand 57% to 33%.
  • Residency and money. Sand keeps raising Lahn's years in Kansas; Lahn keeps raising the more than $12 million Sand's in-laws have given his campaign.
  • Iowa's record. Trump won Iowa by more than 13 points in 2024, and no Democrat has been elected governor there since Chet Culver in 2006.

Key dates

  • October 6, 2026: first debate (St. Ambrose University, Davenport).
  • October 14, 2026: second debate (KTIV-TV, Sioux City).
  • October 21, 2026: Iowa PBS debate.
  • October 27, 2026: fourth debate (KCRG-TV, Cedar Rapids).
  • Tuesday, November 3, 2026: general election.
  • January 2027: the winner takes office.

How the markets settle

Kalshi's Iowa market (GOVPARTYIA-26) is a party contract. It pays out Yes if a member of that party is inaugurated as governor of Iowa after the 2026 election. Kalshi labels each side with the party's nominee, so the price is the party's chance of winning, not a bet on the person.

If a nominee were replaced before Election Day, the contract would still settle on which party wins. Kalshi can settle early once major news outlets call the race.

Polymarket, Polymarket US and Gemini each list the same question, who wins the November 3 general election. Margin-of-victory, turnout, county and Senate-plus-governor combo markets are different questions and aren't on this board.
