Lionel Messi will aim to inspire Argentina to another World Cup triumph when he leads his team into battle this afternoon. The 39-year-old forward has scored eight goals and provided four assists at this tournament. He will need to be at his brilliant best against a Spain defense that has conceded just one goal in seven games at the 2026 World Cup.

Best Spain vs. Argentina props
Messi scored twice to inspire Argentina to victory over France in the 2022 World Cup final. It was widely regarded as the crowning achievement in his career, and his performance settled the GOAT debate for many soccer fans. Elsewhere, Spain was in the doldrums after suffering a shock defeat to Morocco in the Round of 16 at that tournament. However, its fortunes were about to improve, as a gifted 15-year-old winger named Lamine Yamal was earning rave reviews at Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.
Two years later, Yamal delivered an attacking masterclass in Spain’s 2-1 win against England in the European Championship final. By that point, he was seen as Messi’s heir apparent at Barcelona, as he was routinely destroying opposition defenses with his elite dribbling, blistering acceleration, pinpoint crosses, and impressive finishing. Meanwhile, Messi’s career seemed to be winding down. He had left Europe for Inter Miami, and many Argentina fans didn’t expect him to play at the 2026 World Cup.
Fast forward two years, and Messi and Yamal are set to go head-to-head on the biggest stage of all. A photo has been doing the rounds on social media this week, showing a 20-year-old Messi holding Yamal when he was a five-month-old baby. Remarkably, they will now meet in the World Cup final – testament to the evergreen Messi’s relentless perseverance and Yamal’s precocious talent.
Messi recently celebrated his 39th birthday, but the great man shows no signs of slowing down. He scored crucial goals to lead his team to the World Cup semifinals, and he then provided two superb assists to put England to the sword on Wednesday. That saw Messi edge ahead of France’s Kylian Mbappé in the Golden Boot race.
However, Mbappé scored twice in France’s 6-4 defeat against England in the third-place playoff yesterday, so Messi now needs two goals against Spain to clinch the Golden Boot. Yamal hasn’t been at his best during this tournament, but he won a crucial penalty as Spain beat France 2-0 in the semifinals.
Both men are now likely to attract plenty of trading volume as they prepare for the World Cup final. Messi is priced at 34% with Polymarket to score and 25% to assist in this game. Kalshi will let you combine them, as it’s offering 54% on Messi to either score or assist. That won’t be easy, as Spain has kept six clean sheets in seven games at this tournament. The only exception was a 2-1 win against Belgium, as La Roja shut out France, Portugal, Austria, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, and Cape Verde. Polymarket has 27% on Messi to assist, while Kalshi has 31%.
At the other end of the pitch, Yamal will provide Spain’s creative spark. He’s trading at 43% with Kalshi to either score or assist. The 19-year-old playmaker will probably be up against left-back Nicolás Tagliafico. That will be a pivotal duel in this game, and Yamal’s elite dribbling could unsettle the veteran defender. Mikel Oyarzabal, who scored the winning goal against England in the Euro 2024 final, will spearhead Spain’s attack. He has scored five goals at this tournament, and he’s trading at 32% to add to that tally today.
“Both teams to score – no” could attract volume, as it has only paid off in one of Spain’s seven games so far. The Spaniards are on a record-equaling 37-game unbeaten streak, and they look extremely formidable in defense. However, “both teams to score – yes” has landed in all four of Argentina’s knockout stage matches, as the defense looks vulnerable, but La Albiceleste can call upon elite forwards like Messi, Martínez, and Julián Álvarez. That’s trading at 54%, whereas “no” is priced at 47%.
Traders don’t expect many corners, as under 8.5 is priced at 56% with Polymarket.
