Japan vs. Sweden World Cup preview

The only thing we know for sure about the Group F standings is that Tunisia has no chance of making the Round of 32. For Japan and Sweden, this game is going to help decide how many teams advance. Polymarket pricing shows Sweden at +355 odds to win, which translates to an implied probability of just 22%.

The winner of this game is pretty much assured a spot in the knockout rounds. Japan still has a chance of winning the group. The easiest scenario would be earning a win over Sweden and the Netherlands losing to Tunisia, though the latter seems highly unlikely given that the Dutch are a -900 favorite. As far as head-to-head goes, Japan and Netherlands played to a 2-2 draw. With both teams having a +4 goal differential, the group could end up getting decided by the margin of victory from today’s games. Polymarket is showing the probability of the Samurai Blue winning by over 1.5 goals at 28%.

The Swedes, meanwhile, are pursuing a spot in the knockout rounds, and the road isn’t that difficult. Sweden will automatically qualify with a victory over Japan. Another scenario would be claiming one of the eight available third-place spots. Blagut (The Blue-Yellow) is sitting behind the other two teams due to having a zero goal differential.
