Belgium vs. Senegal preview

Senegal could benefit from playing in a much tougher group than Belgium. The African side suffered one-goal losses to France and Norway before thrashing Iraq, 5-0.

Belgium is favored, but it was less than impressive in draws against Egypt and Iran. Like Senegal, the Red Diamonds enjoyed a rout in their final group match, beating New Zealand, 5-1.

To its credit, Belgium enters this match unbeaten in its last 16 games. Romelu Lukaku is the offensive catalyst for Belgium. He has scored 91 goals in 129 caps.

At 35, Kevin De Bruyne is still a major factor for the Red Diamonds, too. He has scored 38 goals in international competition after 122 appearances.

Senegal’s starting goaltender, Edouard Mendy, missed the win over Qatar with a knee injury sustained in the loss to Norway and has been ruled out for this one. Mory Diaw could get the start after recording a clean sheet against Iraq.

Overall, Senegal has the edge in athleticism and speed, especially in the midfield. Ismaila Sarr leads the Lions of Terange with three goals, but Senegal needs to convert more of its chances in the box to beat Belgium.
