Portugal World Cup Odds to Win
Portugal enters the 2026 World Cup as a legitimate contender — but not a favorite. Prediction markets on Kalshi and Polymarket currently price them at roughly 8–9% to lift the trophy, sixth in the outright winner market behind Spain, France, England, Argentina, and Brazil. The bigger subplot for Portugal traders is Cristiano Ronaldo. Both Kalshi and Polymarket have active markets on whether Ronaldo will play in the tournament at all — and the odds are worth watching as June approaches. At 41, he'll be the oldest player to appear in a World Cup, and the market reflects genuine uncertainty about whether Roberto Martínez will bring him into the squad.

Portugal match preview and odds analysis
Portugal climbed up to No. 6 in the FIFA world rankings after winning the UEFA Nations League last summer. Goals from Francisco Conceição and Cristiano Ronaldo earned the Portuguese an impressive 2-1 victory over Germany in the semifinals. The Seleção das Quinas then faced Spain, the reigning European champion, in the final. They were heavy underdogs, but they battled to a 2-2 draw, courtesy of goals from Nuno Mendes and Ronaldo. The game went to a penalty shootout, and Portugal prevailed.
Roberto Martínez’s men have picked up four wins, one draw, and one defeat from six games since then. They’re still sixth in the FIFA world rankings, behind Spain, Argentina, France, England, and Brazil. Prediction markets also make Portugal the sixth most likely team to win the World Cup. The Seleção das Quinas trade at 8.5% on Kalshi, but only 6.9% on Polymarket, where most of the volume has flowed through. That’s a significant spread, as the markets aren’t quite sure how to price in Portugal’s reliance on Ronaldo.
He’s the highest scoring player of all time, with 143 goals for his country, but he’s now well past his physical peak. Ronaldo only scored once at the 2022 World Cup, and Portugal crashed out in the Round of 16. He then failed to score a single goal in five appearances at Euro 2024. Portugal was eliminated in the quarterfinals, and some outlets asked whether his international career was over.
However, Martínez has continued to build his team around Ronaldo, and that strategy appears to be bearing fruit. He’s now scored 13 goals in his last 14 games for Portugal, and he played a key role in last year’s Nations League triumph. There are still question marks about whether he can deliver at a major tournament, but he has silenced his critics for now.
Portugal certainly isn’t a one-man team either. Vitinha, João Neves, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernardo Silva are four of the world’s best midfielders. Mendes is an absolute freight train on the left flank, and the likes of Pedro Neto and Rafael Leão provide pace and trickery to support Ronaldo in attack. Ruben Dias is an excellent defender, but they lack depth at the back, and that could ultimately be their Achilles’ heel, leaving them below Spain, England, France, Argentina, and Brazil on prediction sites.
Group draw and tournament path for Portugal
Portugal’s group stage campaign will begin at Estádio Azteca in Mexico City. The Portuguese will then head north to play their subsequent group stage games in Texas and Florida.
- Portugal vs DR Congo (June 17, Mexico City): Portugal will face DR Congo on Matchday 1. They’re the heavy favorites to win this game, as they look vastly superior to DR Congo, who have qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 52 years.
- Portugal vs Uzbekistan (June 23, Houston): Uzbekistan will play at the World Cup for the first time this summer, benefiting from the expanded 48-team format. The Uzbeks are 52 places below Portugal in the FIFA world rankings, which highlights the gulf in quality between these teams. This should be another straightforward win for Portugal.
- Portugal vs Colombia (June 27, Miami): This game could determine who wins Group K. Colombia finished third in the South American qualifying group, ahead of big teams like Brazil and Uruguay. Los Cafeteros have quality players like Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez in their ranks, so they could be competitive against Portugal.
If Portugal wins Group K, it will head to Kansas City to face a third-place team from Group D, E, I, J, or L in the Round of 32. Portugal would be the overwhelming favorite to win that game. In the Round of 16, the most likely opponent for Portugal is Italy. That would be an exciting game, but Portugal has a superior team to the Azzurri.
The Portuguese are on a collision course with Argentina in the quarterfinals. That could be the game of the tournament, as it would pit Ronaldo against his nemesis, Lionel Messi. They engaged in high-profile battles during their time at Real Madrid and Barcelona, and it would be exciting to see them lock horns again at the World Cup. If they advance to the semifinals, Portugal could face England or Brazil. In the final, potential opponents include Spain and France.

Key players to watch: Can Ronaldo still perform at the highest level?
Portugal has one of the most technically gifted squads in world soccer. These are the key players to watch at the FIFA World Cup:
- Cristiano Ronaldo: Portugal’s captain made his debut for the national team in 2003. Some of his current teammates weren’t even born then. He’s scored a record 143 goals in 226 games for Portugal since then, and he inspired them to glory at Euro 2016. The World Cup has always eluded him, and this will surely be his last chance to lift the trophy.
- Bruno Fernandes: The most creative player in the Premier League will be a vital source of goals and assists for Portugal at this tournament. Fernandes has been remarkably consistent for Man United in recent years, and he remains one of Portugal’s most potent weapons.
- Vitinha: Vitinha and João Neves delivered a series of outstanding performances to lead PSG to victory in the Champions League last year. They will line up alongside one another in Portugal’s midfield at this tournament, and they should control games with their pinpoint passing, defensive prowess, and technical brilliance. Both men are world-class talents, but Vitinha is more polished in possession, and he also has an eye for goal.
- Bernardo Silva: Another experienced Premier League stalwart, who has won all manner of major trophies with Man City over the past nine years. His quick feet and precise passing will be key to unlocking opposition defenses.
- Ruben Dias: Dias is Portugal’s defensive lynchpin. They don’t have any other elite center-backs, so they can’t afford to lose him to injury during the World Cup.
Related prediction markets for Portugal
Tournament winner contracts will settle at $1 if Portugal lifts the trophy. The final settlement date is July 20, 2026 – one day after the final. Contracts will resolve to “no” if Portugal is eliminated at any stage.
You’ll also find related World Cup prediction markets on Portugal:
- Group K winner: Portugal has a 58% chance of winning Group K, according to traders at Kalshi – down from 60% last month. Polymarket traders are more as bullish, pricing Portugal at 64%. Colombia is the second favorite at 32% with Polymarket and 34% with Kalshi.
- Qualify for the knockout stage: The Portuguese are priced at 98% to qualify from Group K with Kalshi. They need a top-two finish to qualify for the knockout stage, or they need to be one of the eight best third-place teams.
- Reach a specific round: You can bet on Portugal to make the Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, or the final. They should be the favorites to win all their games until the quarters, so that could be an interesting option.
- Golden Boot: Ronaldo is priced at 5% to be the tournament’s top scorer. The market is pricing in his dismal return at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024, as he’s below four players in this market – Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, and Vinicius Junior.
- Messi vs Ronaldo: Kalshi has launched a market on which player will have the most goal contributions (goals and assists) at the World Cup. Messi is priced at 48%, Ronaldo is trading at 44%, and a tie is 19%.
