USA vs. Australia preview

The winner of this match will assume first place in Group D and advance to the knockout stage. Depending on the result of Turkey vs. Paraguay in group play, the winner could also win the group outright. There is some uncertainty about Christian Pulisic’s status for the USMNT today.

He aggravated a calf injury in the first half of the opener against Paraguay and was removed from the lineup after 45 minutes. Pulisic has not been able to practice with the team this week, and his status is described as day-to-day.

The good news for Team USA is that striker Folarin Balogun is just fine and appears to be the breakout star for the squad. Balogun scored a pair of goals in the opening 4-1 win over Paraguay. The Americans had never scored that many goals in a World Cup game before.

Australia upset Turkey, 2-0, in its opening match. The Socceroos received a golden performance by goaltender Patrick Beach, who saved all of Turkey’s eight shots on goal. The USA is favored to win Group D at odds of -233 (69%) on Kalshi.
