Polygon unveiled the public beta launch of Verify, an open-source protocol designed to cryptographically authenticate digital media content ranging from articles to images. Verify is built on Polygon’s own blockchain and aims to counter the spread of AI-fabricated media by enabling verification of source legitimacy.

Polygon shared news of the release, which is in collaboration with Fox Corporation. Verify provides media publishers with a path to register their content onchain, so users can verify production origins via an authentication tool.

Key Details:

  • Fox Origination has tagged 89,000+ pieces since the closed beta kicked off in August from Fox News, Fox Business, Fox Sports, and Fox TV affiliates.
  • The protocol code is open-sourced for public collaboration and customization.
  • Commercial prospects through programmatic AI access to verified content.

Polygon and Fox Corporation to help verify authenticity

Verify allows publishers to quickly confirm the authenticity of articles, audio clips, and images by providing them with authenticity stamps. This offers audiences a dependable way to verify the legitimacy of content claiming to come from a Verify-affiliated media outlet.

Fox utilized Polygon’s efficient layer-2 proof-of-stake (PoS) chain to avoid congestion and reduce costs compared to Ethereum.

Polygon Labs researchers involved in Verify’s development state that the framework can handle authentication loads that were previously inconceivable on traditional public blockchains. Additionally, this positions the system for potential widespread adoption as more media outlets aim to protect their content against degradation in information quality.

“As AI-generated text and images flow more widely online, Verify will be able to help consumers not only identify the veritable source of content, but also give media publishers more control over relationships with AI platforms scraping the web,” according to Polygon.

Verify empowers issuers to avoid fluctuations in gas fees by uploading source hashes to Polygon. This allows them to leverage the inherent capabilities of blockchain to establish an immutable trail of provenance markers. In addition, the public beta now permits interested publishers to tailor customizations to meet their specific requirements, especially as AI media oversight becomes more prominent.
